A Closer Look

Malayer — Persia

Malayer is a large village located between the major weaving areas of Hamadan and Sarouk in Northwest Persia.

These rugs were mainly woven by individual weavers in the 19th and early 20th centuries and they feature mostly flower motifs and what is known as the Herati pattern.

Because many Turkish people lived in that area, the Malayer rug features a Turkish single knot, a rare weaving technique. These rugs are popular in history because many travelers visited the city and they have carried their popularity through today.
